Trust is key to sharing creative vision with your designer. My favorite projects consistently are ones where I've established a high level of trust with a client. Once we've established trust, the client and I are able to share a vision of the creative potential of the project.
When working with a client, I always try to schedule a site visit early on in the process. Besides being essential to take measurements and evaluate mechanical considerations, a site visit is often the best way to determine a style that will suit the client's taste. Design cues from the architecture or furniture style will often influence my recommendation. Ultimately though, variety is the spice of life! I enjoy the challenge of creating and designing something new each day. As styles change and new products come to market, my knowledge base and abilities as a designer grows.
By having a stable of talented contractors in my network, I'm able to work with a customer on every aspect of their project. It really lets a customer know I've done this before and have the team in place to handle the details. Plus, who doesn't love to hear, “Hey, I've got a guy who does that!” when the project is in a pinch. Look for designers who are ready and willing to be the project coordinator, even when you have another contractor involved, your designer must understand and be ‘in the loop' on every aspect of the job.
